In the name of Allah, the Beneficient, the Merciful
We praise Allah, the Most High, Most Great, and pray for Allah’s blessings upon His noble Prophet.
()
All
praise is for Allah, Whose compassion is all-encompassing, Whose mercy is
universal- the One Who rewards His servants by His remembrance when they
remember Him. For Allah, Most High, has said: “So remember Me, I will remember
you.” And He awakens in His servants the desire to ask and supplicate to Him,
with His command: “Ask of Me, I will answer you.” And He has made His servants
desirous of raising their needs unto Him, with His saying: “Truly I am near- I
answer the call of the caller when he calls upon Me.” And we bear witness that
there is no god except Allah, the One Who has no partners, and we bear witness
that our master and guide, Muhammad T is His servant and messenger
and the master of all His messengers. Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him
and his family and his companions, the best of companions.
Truly
the remembrance (dhikr) of Allah and raising one’s needs up to him is
the best form of worship that can be uttered by the tongue after the recitation
of the Qur’aan. The Prophet T said: “No people sit and remember Allah except that
the angels surround them and mercy encompasses them and tranquility descends
upon them and Allah mentions them among those who are with Him.” And he T also said: “The likeness of
the one who remembers his Lord and the one who does not remember is like life
and death.” Also, “Du’aa (supplication) is the core of all worship.”
Also, “There is no thing more noble-seeming to Allah than du’aa.” Again,
he T said: “Truly du’aa affects that (situation) which has occurred
and that which is yet to occur. So engage yourselves, O servants of Allah, with
du’aa.” Finally, he said:
“Whoever does not ask anything of Allah, He becomes angry with him.” And Allah,
Most High, has said:
“O
you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance and glorify and praise
Him in the morning and the evening.”
In
light of these verses and traditions of the Prophet , this
booklet has been developed to provide a selected set of supplications which are
to be read at various times during the day and night. These remembrances (dhikr)
and supplications (du’aa) have been extracted from various narrations of
the Prophet T, some of which are given in English below the du’aa
itself- most can be found in the hadeeth collection of Mishkaat-ul-Masabeeh.
The idea of this collection is that every child should be able to memorize
these short prayers and then recite them consistently as they go about their
daily lives. By bringing such remembrance of Allah into our lives, we will insha
Allah be granted those rewards which Allah and His Prophet T have promised us for keeping
Allah’s remembrance. There are many general etiquettes of supplication which
are not described in this booklet but insha Allah will be discussed as
appropriate. This booklet also includes only those du’aa which are not
directly connected with the salaat.

First Kalimah:
The word of purity
There is no god except Allah.
Muhammad is His messenger.
Hadrat Zaid bin ‘Arqam (Allah be pleased with him) narrated
that the Messenger of Allah ()
said: “Whoever says La ilaaha illal-laahu… sincerely will enter the
Paradise.” It was said: And what is the [sign of] sincerity? He said: “That
this kalimah stops him from those things which Allah has forbidden.”
(Tabaraani in Awsat-ul-Kabeer)
“Do you not see how Allah puts forth the likeness of a good word (kalimah tayyibah)? It is like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and whose branches reach to the sky. It brings forth its fruit in all seasons by the command of its Lord. And Allah sets forth parables for men, so that they may take heed. And the likeness of an evil word (kalimah khabeetha- a word of shirk) is like an evil tree, which is uprooted from the face of the earth, and has no stability.” (Quran XIV: 24-26)
Second Kalimah:
The word of testification
I bear witness that there is no god except Allah, Who is Alone and
has no partners;
And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.
Third Kalimah:
The word of glorification
Glory be to Allah. And praise be to Allah.
And there is no god except Allah.
And Allah is the Greatest.
And there is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, Most
Great.
Ibn Mas’ood (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the
Messenger of Allah ()
said: “When I met Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) in the night of Mi’raaj
he asked me to convey his Salaam to my Ummah and to tell them
that the Paradise has a fertile soil and sweet water, and is like a vast field.
And its plants are [the words above].” Another version says: “Whoever recites
the words above, a tree in Paradise is planted for him for each word he says.”
(Virtues of Dhikr; Tirmidhi)
Fourth Kalimah:
The word of Oneness of Allah
There is no god except Allah, Who is Alone and has no partners.
For Him is the Dominion and for Him is all praise. He gives life and causes
death. And He is Living and will never ever die.
Owner of Majesty and Honor: In His Hands is all goodness. And He has power over
all things.
Abu Hurairah (Allah be pleased with him) reports that the
Messenger of Allah ()
said: “A person who recites: Laa ilaaha illal-laahu wahdahu laa shareeka
lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ‘alaa kulli shay-in qadeer, a
hundred times daily will have reward equal to that of freeing ten slaves and
one hundred good deeds will be written for him, and one hundred of his sins
will be lifted from him, and for the whole day, he will remain immune from the
Shaytaan until the evening, and on the Day of Judgment, no one will exceed him
in merit except one who has done [these phrases] more.” (Agreed upon)
Fifth Kalimah:
The word of repentance
I seek forgiveness of my Lord for every sin that I have sinned- intentionally or accidentally, in secret or in open- and I repent to Him for the sins that I am aware of, and for the sins that I am not aware of. Truly You (Oh Allah!) are the Knower of the Unseen, and the Coverer of Faults, and the Forgiver of Sins. And there is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, Most Great.
Agharr ibn Yasaar (Allah be pleased with him) said that the
Messenger of Allah ()
said: “O you people! Repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness. Truly I myself
offer repentance one hundred times each day.” (Muslim)
Sixth Kalimah:
The word of rejection of disbelief
Oh Allah! Truly I seek refuge in You from holding any partners with You knowingly. And I see forgiveness of You for that which I am not aware of. I repent of such deeds and I clear myself from any actions of disbelief and idolatry and lying and backbiting and innovation and slander and lewdness and abomination and every type of sin. And I submit to You and I say:
There is no god except Allah;
Muhammad is His Messenger.
Dua Lesson 7: Waking Up in the Morning
All praise is for Allah Who revived us to life after giving us death and to Him we shall have to return.[1]
Abu Hurairah (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the
Messenger of Allah ()
said: “Shaytaan ties three knots at the back of the head of any one of
you when you go to sleep. On every knot he reads and exhales the following
words, “The night is long, so stay asleep.” [i.e. Do not wake up in time for Fajr
prayer.] When one awakes and remembers
Allah, one knot is undone; and when one does wuduu’, another knot is
undone; and when one performs the prayer, the last knot is undone and one gets
up energetic with a good heart in the morning; otherwise one gets up lazy and
with a mischievous heart.” (Bukhari)
Dua Lesson 8: Entering the Bathroom
In the name of Allah. Oh Allah! I seek refuge in You from the foul male and female devils.[2]
A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of
Allah ()
used his right hand for ablution and for eating and used his left hand for
washing himself (after going to the bathroom) or for any other disagreeable
thing.
A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) said: Whoever told you
that the Prophet ()
used to go to the bathroom standing up, do not believe him. He did not use to
go to the bathroom except sitting down. (Mishkaat)
Dua Lesson 9: Coming out of the Bathroom

Abu Hurairah (Allah be pleased with him) reported: When
Allah’s Messenger ()
used to come out of the toilet, I brought water for him in a pot or in a water skin
and he used to wash himself. Then he rubbed his hands on the earth. Then I
brought him another vessel of water and he performed wuduu’ with it. (Mishkaat)
Dua Lesson 10: Wuduu’
Before Wuduu’:
In the name of Allah, Most
Gracious, Most Merciful.[4]
After Wuduu’:
I testify that there is no god except Allah; He is alone, He has no partner; and I (further) testify that Muhammad is indeed His servant and messenger. Oh Allah! Make me of those who are repentant and make me of those who are purified.[5]
Abu Hurairah (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the
Messenger of Allah ()
said: “My followers will be called on the Day of Resurrection with faces
shining on account of the effect of wuduu’. So whoever among you intends
to enhance the brightness, let him do so [by doing wuduu’ well].” (Agreed upon)
Dua Lesson 11: During Adhaan
While the mu’adh-dhin is calling the Adhaan, repeat each sentence as he says it. After “Hayya ‘alas-Salaah” and “Hayya ‘alal-Falaah” say:
There is no power and no strength except in Allah.[6]
After “Qad qaamatis-Salaah” in the Iqaamah say:
May Allah establish it and keep it so forever.
After “As-Salaat Khayrum-minan-Nawm” during the Fajr Adhaan say:
You have spoken true and spoken well.
‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin al-‘Aas reported Allah’s Messenger () as
saying: “When you hear the call of the Mu’adh-dhin, say
what he says; then invoke a blessing upon me, for he who invokes a blessing
upon me, Allah will invoke ten blessings upon him for that. Then beg waseelah
from the Lord for me. It is a rank in Paradise which none but a servant amongst
the servants of Allah is worthy to have and I hope that I am one such servant.
He who begs waseelah for me, intercession will be assured for him. (Mishkaat)
(Here, waseelah means the highest rank in Paradise.)
Dua Lesson 12: After Adhaan
Oh Allah! Lord of this perfect call, and of the prayer to be offered presently. Grant to Muhammad the way of approach unto You, and also eminence, and raise him to the glorious position which You have promised him, and give us his intercession on the Day of Judgment. And You do not go back on Your promise.[7]
Anas (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah’s Messenger
() as
saying: “The du’aa between the Adhaan and the Iqaamah
is not turned down.”
‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr (Allah be pleased with him) reported that
a person said: O Allah’s Messenger (),
verily those who call the Adhaan have excelled us in blessings.
Thereupon, Allah’s Messenger (
)
said: “You say those words as they say and when you come to the end, beg (of
your Lord) and it will be given to you.” (Mishkaat)

to subdue it. Behold we are assuredly to return unto our Lord. Oh Allah! Truly
we ask You for goodness and taqwaa in this travel of ours and for those actions
which please You. Oh Allah! Make easy for us this journey of ours and make us
cover its distance quickly. Oh Allah! You are our Companion in the travel and
the Guardian of (our) household. Oh Allah! I seek refuge with You from the
toils of travel, from beholding a miserable sight (on arrival), and from an evil
